ROCCA CALASCIO AND HOW TO REACH THIS FAMOUS CASTLE ON THE ROCK

First of all please check your backpack and be sure to have inside:

(Summer season)

  • Sun protecting cream

  • Sunglasses

  • Jacket if it rains

  • Sweatshirt if it gets cold and windy

  • Comfortable shoes

  • Water

  • 5 euros cash to donate to the castle

After you passed those checkpoints get in you car and drive for 2 hrs straight via A24 highway to Rocca Calascio is the highest town of Central Italy (1460m).

You’ll find several parkings in town on the bottom of the mountain. So feel free to use one of them and start climbing the “sentiero” (trail). For those who don’t feel like 40 min of climbing in the heat you can choose the easy option and use a navetta(shuttle) that will bring you up to little mountain town.

The brave ones should expect an easy path, Id give 4 out of 10 (difficulty level) for an unexperienced person. So no worries everyone will get to the top!

The first thing you see is actually not a castle, but a cute octagonal church of The Saint Mary that was built between the XVI and XVII centuries.

Church at Rocca Calascio

And only after that you’ll see this gorgeous castle in front of you. The entrance inside is free, but you can donate any amount you want to maintain the castle.

Rocca Calascio Castle was filmed in Ladyhawke (with Roger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer), The Name of the Rose (with Sean Connery) and The American (with George Clooney).

After the visit you can enjoy local dishes like homemade pasta with meat ragout or arrosticini. We’ve had lunch at Ristorante Rifugio della Rocca (Località Rocca, 67020 Calascio AQ) and enjoyed its genuine kitchen.

Now I’m thinking to go there in winter. Just look how picturesque it is!

PS like and share if it was useful!
