I am often asked (and it’s not a simple blogger “call to action” thing) if I rent my Airbnb apartments long term or how to rent an apartment in Rome at least for one month.
And it’s not an easy question I should say! Here are some places where you can look up for an apartment in Rome:
1. Airbnb: this option is available only in the low season (November till March). go for the apartment that you like, select the whole month and send a request message to the owner asking him if he’d make a special price for you if you rent for the whole month or even more. Be realistic, go for the sleeping areas and not the city centre. No-one will rent you a profitable business item.
2. Facebook: you’ll say its a strange advice but In groups like @expats.living.in.rome people give great advices and share landlords direct contacts etc
3. @immobiliare.it - if you rent for more than 12 month (for shorter you’ll need to look for “contratto transitorio”, not everyone allows that) . Also be prepared to leave from 3 to 6 month of rent in deposit.
4. Agencies that rent for students may have a variety of small flats in the areas close to the universities.
5. Spotahome, housinganywhere - some alternative to Airbnb websites . I haven’t tried them personally so I can’t say how reliable there are
PS why so complicated to rent in Rome? An Italian law gives a priority to the tenant during the rent contract, so its him who kind of “own the propriety” when he’s inside the apartment. That’s why even if the tenant wouldn’t pay the rent it would be hard for the landlord to kick him out. Because of that law the real estate market is very slow and many owners would prefer to keep the apartment shut than to rent it.
